There was a team of freshers who had been provided all that the management gurus suggest: freedom, challenges, growth opportunities, appraisals every three months, keys to the office, flexibility , what have you..
They were aware of the money inflow and outflow. They were aware that this was a company being built by a first generation enterpreneur. They were also aware that they were creating deliverables with a rejection rate of over 70% and the company name was being put at stake and that the payments were being delayed because of that.
And yet, at the slightest of provocation, they were keen to throw shit back at the management and walk out as a group after shouting and mis-behaving. What is it about this generation? What is this easier softer path and quick money that these 20 somethings are craving for? What about hard work and quality and faith and respect? In four months, the team believed that the company existed because of them and they were the ones running the show and getting the work and everything else. What is it that makes them so puffed up with bloated egos and zero knowledge and no wisdom.
As it is being an enterpreneur is difficult in this country and to train a bunch of youngsters to deliver quality product on time is an uphill task. Now in place of gratitude, what you get is this ‘go to hell’ attitude.
One is really losing faith in all theses leadership rules and stick to the good old ones: maintain confidentiality, secrecy and treat them the way they deserve to be treated. If they do not know english, they should know that that is a drawback. Stop pampering them and treating them with kidgloves.
The clients are always a problem. Now the team is a problem.
I guess one of the solutions would be to take only 30+ men because that is when the boys become men with some maturity. To hell with youth and skillsets. Growing up is too painful for them and it is easier to blame the company, the management, the client, anybody but themselves when they are below 30. And they also know that they always have there parents to fall back on. So the job is just for staying in Delhi and meeting their girlfriends (or finding new ones).
Carpe diem, seize the day and what a day it has been!
